Met a Green Milkweed Locust Phymateus viridipes while out today. Milkweed locusts feed on toxic milk
Met a Green Milkweed Locust Phymateus viridipes while out today. Milkweed locusts feed on toxic milkweed, and are thus toxic themselves. This entire family (Pyrgomorphidae) knows this party trick, and so many have bright warning coloration in some form, such as the striking red and black coloring of the Koppie Foam Grasshopper or, in the case of this one, brightly coloured wings (which I was unfortunately unable to photograph). This coloration gives the family the nickname “Gaudy Grasshoppers”.My field guide book describes the foam they emit when threatened as “evil-smelling”. -- source link
