pavelow:mythiass:bigwordsandsharpedges:Battle of Sugar Point. 1898. Bagonegiizhig (Often incorrectly spelled Bugonaygeshig) and 18 other Pillager Band members fought the US 3rd Infantry in Leech Lake, Minnesota. Band members from Leech Lake would be arrested on minor charges and taken to Duluth, Minnesota (about 3 hours away by MODERN CAR) to bear witness or be put on trial in federal court. In fall of 1898 Marshals came to Leech Lake to seize Ogimaa Bagonegiizhig to have him bear witness to a bootlegging trial. They fought back. After a full day of a quiet standoff on the shore of Leech Lake, a 3rd Infantry soldier supposedly dropped his rifle and fired a shot off, causing the deciding firefight. All 19 Ojibwe Ogichidaag were unscathed, while 6 infantry were killed and 16 were wounded. They let Bagonegiizhig and all of Leech Lake live and let be until much later.Arm yourselves. Live free, or die. -- source link
