Penitent’s Stone (March 30, 2021).Stones of Story and Myth (19 of ?).ORIGINAL: $45 2.5”x2.3” watercolor on cold press paper, floated in 5”x7” mat.Deep into the valleys of the Painted Mountains along the southern coast, and set into a small alcove, is the Penitent’s Stone. Neither a gate stone, nor marker stone, the Penitent’s Stone a grave stone. Despite the bright colors of the surrounding mountain’s, this stone marks the final resting place of Polgaeren, Lighterfae elder of the Wilder. Wise and powerful in his later years, Polgaeren had spent is his youth manipulating the politics of the five Great Clans to his best personal advantage. When his machinations resulted in the deaths of his own wife and son, centuries later, at the hands of raiding party out of the Sounding Deeps, Polgaeren removed himself from the Wilder and took to wandering the Painted Mountains as a hermit. He never refused a request for aid or assistance, but isolated himself as pennance for his hubris. The Penitent’s Stone was set by the Wilder upon hearing of his passing.
