agardenandlibrary:finally read another one of the books I’ve had for a whileMAISIE DOBBS by Jacqueline WinspearI picked it up because it reminded me of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, though I think it ended up being more like a Poirot novel than an adventure like MFMM. I liked the look into WWI’s effects (since WWII is a more popular subject - understandably). This book is more of a character study for Maisie Dobbs than a mystery, however. It was good, just don’t pick it up expecting a mind-bending read.I have the second one too, and I think I’ll read it, though possibly after reading Scorpio Races again.I’m so glad I’m not the only one who felt let down by Maisie Dobbs! I was annoyed by the lack of detective rigor, and the strange theosophy-leaning intuition Maisie uses. Also, I thought the historical context/texture was rather clumsily handled /rant. I’ve read the first two, and have heard the later installments in the series are better, but I’m not sure I care enough to stick with it. As a rule, though, female sleuths and historical mysteries and WWI are all Things of mine. -- source link
