ruby-red-inky-blue: andorjyny:cassian appreciation week life | day three: underappreciated moment - cassian being a mathematical genius under significant pressure on jedha much as i honestly enjoy ‘Cassian as a maths genius’ headcanons - I never read this as Cassian doing math more quickly than a droid and a navigational computer, but more him knowing that imperfect math NOW still had a bigger chance of getting them out than perfect math LATER, plus a hefty dose of whatever the mathematical equivalent of muscle memory is. Which, to my mind, is a better fit for the overall theme of Rogue One. Because then it’s not genius, it’s not a rare gift he just happened to have. Then it’s competence, born from routine, from having to scrape by on terrible odds or lose both his life and everything he risks it for again and again, until it becomes that thing where you know how to do something not based on any kind of sound logic but just because you’re confident you can, because you’ve done it before. Star Wars has a tendency to want to make people exceptional, even superhuman. Rogue One is the only one to make the point that war isn’t won by godlike individuals, and rebellions aren’t led by literal embodiments of hope and moral purity (arguably TLJ attempted to make the same point, but R1 is the only one that actually succeeded imo). It’s about ordinary people who are only good at things because they have to be, because they’d already be dead if they weren’t, who find themselves in a position to change the world and do it, knowing it will cost them their lives. And that’s why, even though it’s a very fun idea to play around with, the interpretation of Cassian as randomly exceptionally gifted rubs me the wrong way.
