Henri Matisse - Self Portrait (1918) - Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse was born at eight o'clock in the evening on the last night of the year, 31 December 1869, Le Cateau-Cambrésis is in the extreme north of France near the Belgian border. The house had two rooms, a beaten earth floor and a leaky roof. Matisse said long afterwards that rain fell through a hole above the bed in which he was born. He was known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter.
