Saudi soldiers storm the underground areas around the Grand Mosque in Mecca, 1979. In that year, insurgents claiming that their leader was the Mahdi – the savior of Islam – took over the holiest mosque in Islam for two weeks. They were agitating for the overthrow of the Saudi royal family.
