teratomarty:For BlackOut day, I’d like to add my own personal favourite bit of black history, from MedievalPOC. See these socks? These socks are around 2,000 years old, and were originally owned by an African-Roman soldier who was stationed in Scotland. Apparently he was freezing his ass off, and his family sent woolly socks, along with some underpants and a nice note. We don’t have a picture of him, but he disproves a couple of racist stereotypes that really bug me, a. that black people were invented in the USA in 1861, and b. that they were always slaves, where-ever they were. He was a soldier at the furthest reaches of the Roman empire, in en era that too many people visualise as all-white, possibly due to an unduly racialised interpretation of marble statues. Also, Keep Britain White can kiss my ass. -- source link
