anagnori:Maps of attraction spectrums.Apparently everybody likes the “differently mapped” idea better than the “gap” idea, so I made some visualization aids. Top row is the type of attraction, second row is the names for specific instances of attraction (i.e. romantic attraction > crush, platonic attraction > squish, etc.). Thete is my own coinage, and to my knowledge there’s no name for a specific instance of sensual attraction, hence the ???.The point of these images is to show that asexual and aromantic people may feel attraction differently than romantic allosexual people, but that these differences are equally beautiful and loving in their own way, and nothing is “lacking.”Don’t take the placement of the categories too seriously - just because they’re next to each other on the spectrum doesn’t mean they’re related. Each category should be considered independent of the rest.These images are flawed. And I’m not just talking about my crappy Photoshop skills. The real flaw is that they are based on common assumptions, models and paradigms used in the asexual community, but which we rarely examine or question. For starters, we usually treat romantic, sexual, sensual, platonic and aesthetic attraction as being unconnected and independent of each other, when for a lot of people some types of attraction may be dependent on other types of attraction being present. There’s issues like romantic orientation not applying to everyone, and whether “platonic attraction” is distinct from friendship or not. There’s also very little discussion of how aesthetic and sensual attraction actually work, how common it is for them to be distinct from romantic/sexual attraction, and how much of the difference is context-based rather than solely emotional. There are more reasons for criticism, too.Basically I just want more neat pictures and more people trying to figure out how this stuff actually works. And it’s nice to visualize an asexual spectrum that isn’t grayscale for once. -- source link
