Totally tumbleweedsThis shot and a few others were taken this week in a neighborhood of the city of Victorville, California. Victorville sits on the edge of the Mojave Desert, just north of the mountains that flank Los Angeles and just north of the San Andreas fault. Tumbleweeds grow as thorny, branching bushes, and they drop their seeds when they are picked up and moved by the wind. High winds in the desert (over 100 km/hour) were enough to move large numbers of tumbleweeds that grew during the rainy season. They bounced along the desert until they hit an obstacle – in this case, a neighborhood at the southern end of the city. There used to be other obstacles in the way, such as native Joshua trees, but many of those have been cleared for development, leaving only the houses to block the blowing weeds. The thorns on the weeds interlocked as they hit the homes, turning the blowing weeds into huge piles and requiring the assistance of dozens of people to cut through them and haul the debris away.-JBBImage credit: https://wxch.nl/2HfjBquRead more: https://lat.ms/2vuEwEj -- source link
