AMERICAN REVOLUTION HISTORY MEME [1/1 WAR] | American Revolutionary War, 1775-1783The Revolutionary War was the war whereby the thirteen British colonies of North America fought against Crown forces in order to win their independence as a separate country. War was the culmination of a period of cultural upheaval as the colonies, having employed local government far from the mother country for years, rejected Britain’s methods of raising revenue following the Seven Years’ War, such as enforcing “taxation without representation”. Political tensions and violence increased over several years, particularly in New England, as the British troops sent to the colonies to keep order clashed with locals angered by the government’s perceived abuse of authority, leading to events such as the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party, and finally the first battles at Lexington and Concord. John Adams famously wrote, “ But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments of their duties and obligations. … This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution.”Much of Europe became involved in the war as the Americans gained allies against the increasingly threatening British Empire. The success of the American Revolution set off a chain effect of similar cultural revolutions and independence movements throughout Europe and the Americas which continued through the 1820s, the most famous being the French Revolution. -- source link
