Austin Proposition 1 Results MapProposition 1 was an industry-sponsored citizen’s ballot initiative concerning recently-enacted city ordinances governing the operation of so-called ride hailing or transportation networking companies within Austin (think Lyft, Uber, and the like). A special referendum was held May 7, 2016 directly asking the voters in the city to overrule the city council and repeal the ordinances. A “Yes” (for) vote favored repeal, while a “No” (against) vote favored keeping the rules in place. After an expensive and contentious campaign, the proposition was defeated 55%-45%. Voter turnout was 17.5%.Examining the map, the most striking feature is the stark contrast between the heavily “Pro” areas around Downtown and UT-Austin and the heavily “Against” Central Austin neighborhoods. The map also shows some decent contrasts in South Austin, where some precincts voted strongly in favor while adjoining precincts were strongly opposed.Further study is needed to explain some of these patterns.© Nik Freeman | mapsbynik.com 2016Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlikeElection results from traviselectionresults.comPrecinct boundaries from the Travis County Tax Office and Williamson County ElectionsParcel data from Travis Central Appraisal District and Williamson Central Appraisal DistrictRoad lines from OpenStreetMapHand-crafted using Python, PostGIS and TileMillMercator Projection -- source link
