Epping Forest, London, UK, December 2020White saddle fungus (Helvella crispa)Often found beside well-trodden paths (though usually earlier in the year than this - but it’s been reasonably mild so far), I at first mistook these and their worn, undulating caps for a mushroom that had been kicked or trodden - but they’re really quite pretty once you realise they’re meant to be that shape, especially their fluted stems. They’re sometimes also known as elfin saddles - an etymology similar to dryad’s saddle (Polyporus squamosus) - for their curved, almost saddle shaped caps. -- source link
