morwens:middle-earth history meme → 2/2 BATTLES: Dagor BragollachThus ended the Siege of Angband; and the foes of Morgoth were scattered and sundered one from another. OF THE RUIN OF BELERIAND, THE SILMARILLION The Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame) began in the year FA 455, when Morgoth finally broke the Siege of Angband by sending forth from Thangorodrim rivers of flame which destroyed the plain of Ard-Galen, called from that moment on Anfauglith, the Gasping Dust. It was then that Morgoth first revealed his wingless dragons, and his legions were led by Glaurung, Father of Dragons. The armies of Angband quickly conquered most of the northern regions of Beleriand, taking Dorthonion and forcing most of the Noldor to flee south. Maglor’s Gap was soon overrun and the Pass of Aglon breached, so Maglor joined Maedhros in the defense of the city of Himring, and Celegorm and Curufin fled to Nargothrond. When the Orcs got into Thargelion and East Beleriand, Caranthir, Amrod and Amras allied with the Green Elves and resisted the attacks from the North, while Maedhros and Maglor held the northern borders along the March of Maedhros. The forces of the Noldor were divided, the sons of Fëanor scattered around Beleriand, and the Siege was broken. When Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, learned about their defeat, he set out to challenge Morgoth himself in single combat before the doors of Angband. Though he wounded Morgoth seven times with his sword Ringil, he finally died, crushed under the Dark Lord’s foot. The Battle of Sudden Flame continued for years after that, with great loss on both parties, until the deeds of Beren and Lúthien, which gave hope to the Noldor that Morgoth could be defeated, and which later led to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Unnumbered Tears. -- source link
