It requires everything from more challenging curriculums and more demanding parents to better support for teachers and new ways to measure how well our kids think, not how well they can fill in a bubble on a test.” -President Obama, 2014 State of the Union Address…like teaching students Latin, so that students Presidents can speak properly?I love Latin as much as the next guy, but I don’t think the Latin fandom needs to be pretentious about Latin words that found their way into English. Curriculum, while it is a Latin word, is also an English word, and therefore can obey the rules of English. While, yes, many dictionaries propose curricula as a plural form of curriculum, the same dictionaries also list curriculums as a plural form. The same goes for cacti/cactuses and antennae/antennas. It’s not as though Latin hasn’t done this. Gymnasium and anarchia were both Latinized imports from Greek, and they behave like normal Latin words.Recte. It seems a bit too much (to me, at least) to point to a naturalized Latin word using an English termination and then to suggest that it is an example of improper speech when used in English, especially when the word is used in a distinctly modern situation. -- source link
