snappyjenkins: “Well, you know as well as I do, that given the right circumstances, anybody’s capable of anything. Plus, he had no family to keep him on the straight. Lot to be said for family.” “And what if you don’t have any? Do you think that’s how you end up your days? Alone in some two-bob kip, nothing but a bottle for company?” “That’s his future, not yours. You’ll make better choices.”#narrator: he did not make better choicesSo, with no animus, I’d like to push back against this narrative, of which I see a fair bit in the Endeavour fandom. I don’t know whether this is because the Endeavour fandom skews much younger than the wider Morseverse fandom (hi, youths!), or because of a lack of knowledge of the novels/original series, or some combination of these things, or something else entirely. But anyway!A Defense of E. Morse’s Life ChoicesHe does not end up in a two-bob kip! He owns property off the Banbury Road! This is a pleasing and leafy part of Oxford (and again: he owns a house in Oxford, no small achievement, cf. the Lewis episode “Generation of Vipers.”) While he doesn’t have long-term romantic relationships, he doesn’t live like a monk. He doesn’t end up with only a bottle for company! He has a carefully chosen, beloved selection of books and a really impressive opera collection, lovingly and discriminatingly built up over the course of years. Also, he happily goes to the opera on a regular basis, investing time and money (and receiving emotional and artistic satisfaction) in performances not only at Covent Garden but at Bayreuth, if memory serves. He does not end up alone except in the most technical sense. I don’t know if this is a romance-centric interpretation or what. But he has an enduring, close friendship with Max, a slightly prickly but intensely loyal friendship with Strange, and is bound to Lewis by genuine and deep affection. Also, he sings in a choir!A pessimist Morse may be, but he’s not embittered; he’s compassionate, takes delight in sensual pleasures of the everyday, and retains a sense of humor and a sensitivity to beauty. These look like pretty good life choices to me. -- source link
