ica-zakura: Gion Bayashi (1953) Michiyo Kogure as Geiko Miyoharu in the background and Ayako Wakao as Maiko Miyoei in the foreground, who is shown here, being dressed for her Misedashi (debut as a Maiko). “Gion Bayashi” (Gion Festival of Music) is a renowned motion picture, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi in 1953, which was re-released in the USA under the title “A Geisha” in 1978. Originally intended as a re-make of Mizoguchi’s earlier and much more cynical film, “Gion no Shimai” (Sisters of Gion) made in 1936, Mizoguchi was said to be unhappy with the Studio imposed changes to the plot of “Gion Bayashi” even though the film was a popular success.
