Archimedes goes for a streak, The Legend of Archmedes PrincipleSometime in the 3rd century BC King Hieron II or Syracuse gave a jeweler a gold bar to be fashioned into a crown. However when Hieron received his crown he suspected that the jeweler had substituted a less valuable metal such as silver and pocketed the gold. He knew of no way to prove his suspicions without drilling into the crown to see if it was gold plated. For a solution he turned to Syracuse’s most intelligent citizen, the famous classical scientist, engineer, mathematician and philosopher Archimedes.Archimedes too devoted a lot of thought to the problem, but was unable to formulated any good solutions. One day he was mulling over the problem while sitting in a bath when he noticed that his body caused the level of water in his bath to rise, and that his body displaced the water. An idea then came to Archimedes that if silver crown, which used more metal than a gold crown since silver had a lesser density, it should displace more water than a gold crown.Archimedes was so excited by his discovery that he jumped from his bath, and neglecting to put his clothes on he ran out into the streets of Syracuse shouting, “EUREKA!, EUREKA!!!”, Greek for “I have found it”. The jewelers crown was found to be a fake, but more importantly the discovery led to Archimedes Principle, an underlying concept of fluid mechanics. -- source link
