Japanese Type 99 “Last Ditch” bolt action rifle, World War II.Called a “last ditch” model because it was made towards the end of the war, when Japan was nearing defeat and needed to produce more weapons with less resources. As a result “last ditch” rifles were crudely built using inferior metals, had crude fixed sights, had a roughly carved stock which were sometimes left unfinished, and had a rough wooden buttplate hammered into place with two nails. -- source link
