Cross and Lighthouse, Fisterra, Galicia, Spain, 2011It was long thought that Fisterra (in Gallego; in Castellano it is Finisterre) was the westernmost point of Europe. In fact it is not even the westernmost point in Spain. Punta de Estaca de Bares, a few kilometers further north along the Costa da Morte holds that distinction. As illustrated in the previous post, he westernmost point of Europe is in Portugal. For all that, Fisterra is important for it marks the absolute end of the Camino Santiago, a place where pilgrims could collect scallop shells to prove their pilgrimage and watch the sun set (on the somewhat rare days when the weather is clear) over the edge of the earth. And it offers a small but sheltered anchorage. It is not for nothing that the nearby shore is called the “Coast of Death.” -- source link
