momtngirl:callstheadventurescience:fedupblackwoman:the-future-now:All of the animals above — and more — are “critically endangered.”Nooooo! :-(Okay ya’ll, yes the situation is dire for many species (AND NOT JUST THE CHARISMATIC MEGA VERTEBRATES HIGHLIGHTED HERE), but you’re really just gonna leave this depressing shit here and sit on your hands and cry about it? No one is going to chime in on how each and every single person on this goddamned website can do something to help?1. Support your local zoos and aquaria. Yes, I know you’ve been so convinced by all the anti-captivity rhetoric flying around. While yes you should be critical of the practices in animal husbandry (which includes the fact that maybe you don’t want to go support that “ride the elephants” attraction on your next “I’m going to go find myself” trip to Thailand) there’s this really handy thing called the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that vet these programs. Go see if your local zoos or aquaria are AZA. It’s a starting point. I’m not here to discuss the validity of captivity with you. For so many species, zoos and aquaria are the one thing standing between them and total extinction.2. Write your local legislature. I spy at least one species on the above list that can and does benefit from actions to protect it and its habitat in the USA alone.3. Check out any of these links. Monetary donations aren’t your thing? Volunteer at any of the associations linked above.4. Start actually acting like you give a crap about the environment. Act locally, think globally, and start living more sustainably. Also check out this guide from Racing Extinction’s Challenge Yourself page5. Take a look at the voting record of local and national political candidates on environmental issues before you vote. I cannot stress this one enough.Don’t just accept extinction as a foregone conclusion for all endangered species. It’s scary and depressing and I’d be lying to you if I said that I wake up hopeful and cheerful and chipper in the face of working within the realities of these facts every day. And yes there are some species for which extinction in the wild is an inevitability. But if this is the same tumblr that thinks that it can enact a change by signing petitions and spreading things “like wildfire” (sorry gag me though), then you can at least take it upon yourselves to start making a change and encouraging others in your communities to do so as well. Walk the walk people.^exactly!!! Do something. Anything for fuck’s sake. -- source link
