queeninwinter:Fashions of Westeros: The NorthThe North is one of the last places in Westeros where the distinct influence of the First Men can still be seen, rejecting certain styles brought by the Andals. Northern clothing is made mostly from heavy wools, furs, and leathers, rarely preferring the lighter fabrics of the South. Despite its reputation as a dark, dour place, the clothing is anything but, favoring bright colors and intricate designs. Gold and silver are uncommon in the North, and so jewelry is typically made from cheaper metals like copper or bronze, adorned with beads and semiprecious stones. Jewelry can be found carved from the white weirwood branches or mammoth ivory, though few mammoths remain south of the Wall. Thanks to the cold, the cloak is the single most important item of clothing in the North and as such, is decorated accordingly. A cloak’s embroidery and beading can tell much about the wearer, and most Northerners have their house sigil as a focal motif of the design. Since hats and hoods are so important, hair is often kept in simple braided styles. Important regional variations: Cape Kraken has significant Ironborn fashion influence, while White Harbor has kept some of the fashions brought by the Manderlys from the Reach. Clothing in the Neck has been adapted for the swampy climes, and the crannogmen tend to prefer greens and browns, so as to not stand out so obviously to invaders.Inspiration: medieval Russia, (x), (x) -- source link
