Orangutans are born with an ability to reason and think. This large, gentle red ape is one of humankind’s closest relatives, sharing nearly 97% of the same DNA. Due to poaching and habitat loss from deforestation and the palm oil plantations that are devastating Indonesia in 2014, orangutans become the most critically endangered and if the main threats are not addressed in a serious, urgent, and sustained manner, wild orangutans will be gone from this earth. “Unless the developments can be stopped soon, no orangutan population of undoubted viability will be left in the world within decade,” the scientists said, adding, “if our estimation are in error, they error in the timescale of the change, but not in its direction.” Learn ways that you can help in the battle to save orangutans by attending Seminar Nasional Orangutan by Kelompok Studi Satwa Liar Fakultas Kedokteran Hewan Universitas Gadjah Mada (KSSL FKH UGM) on early October 2015.
