A Japanese girl displays “Tokyo 1940” and the Olympic symbol, laid out in pearls (1938).Tokyo city officials suggested an Olympic bid for purposes ofinternational diplomacy, as Japan had been expelled from the Leagueof Nations after the Mukden Incident. In 1936, Tokyo was chosen tohost the 1940 Games, the first non-Western city to win an Olympicbid. The Second Sino-Japanese War broke out in July 1937, and the feasibility of the Games began to be questioned both at home andinternationally. Some countries suggested boycotting the Olympics ifthey were held in Tokyo. In July 1938, Japan announced that itwouldn’t host the Games after all, and they were transferred toHelsinki (Finland), which had been the runner-up in the biddingprocess. These Games were eventually cancelled due to WW2,particularly the Winter War.Helsinki would host the Olympic Games in 1952, and Tokyo in 1964. Germany and Japan were banned from competing in the 1948 Games. -- source link
