Lydford Castle, Lydford, Devon by Baz Richardson (now away for a while) It’s called a castle and it has what looks like a medieval keep, but although it dates from the 13th century (when according to English Heritage it was built on top of a 12th century predecessor) within a few years Lydford Castle had been made a prison and also became what was effectively a courthouse for Dartmoor, enforcing the laws that regulated both Dartmoor’s forest and also its important tin industry. By the mid-17th century the castle was entirely in ruins, but in the 18th century it was restored and again used as a prison and as the meeting-place of the manor and borough courts. The site is now maintained by English Heritage. From Saxon times onwards Lydford, which is on the western fringes of Dartmoor, was actually an important town rather than the quiet village it is now, and it was second in importance only to Exeter. There are fascinating notes about the history of Lydford at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydford and www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/lydford-castle-a… https://flic.kr/p/2mNcdW8 -- source link
