senadimell:One of my all-time favorite paintings. Marianne Stokes: La Jeune Fille et la MortDeath and the MaidenDeath has almost the same face as the maiden, who is leaning towards death, but also clutching the blanket to her chest like she’s defending herself. Is she dismayed or eager? Death is expressionless, yet could be a thinner version of the living woman. Death is holding up her hand as if to say “not yet,” and yet why else would death visit? Also, death is female, as opposed to many of the male/female death and the maiden depictions. Then there’s the unusual shape, and the way the eye is led between both figures by the design. -- source link
