Andreas Riis Carstensen (Nov. 9, 1844 - 1906) was a Danish marine painter who had already been a sailor from age 13. He entered the Danish Academy at age 20 and later also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He continued to travel the world and paint: Canada, the US, The West Indies, The Mediterranean and Middle East (he visited Syria in his own boat), and Egypt (where he visited numerous times, partly because the founder of the Carlsberg breweries commissioned 11 paintings from there for his collection). But more than any other location Carstensen loved Greenland. He visited twice: 1884 and 1888. Here is a canvas from one of those trips:Andreas Riis Carstensen: Summer Day in Greenland with an Umiak in a Fiord, 1880s - oil on canvas (Privately owned) -- source link
