(Cahokia is located in what’s now Illinois, directly across the river from St Louis, and flourished from c. 1050-1350 CE; it’s presently the biggest and most complex archeological site north of the great Aztec and Maya cities, and was one of the greatest cities in the world its height, with a bigger population than London had at the time. It was a complex of some 120 earthen mounds of varying sizes, shapes, and functions, and covered about six square miles. The period came to an end with the Little Ice Age, and nobody knows what the city was actually called; the site is named after the Cahokia tribe, who lived in the area at the time of European contact.) -- source link
