beggars-opera:My favorite overlooked object in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is one of those “people have always been people” items tucked away among all the portraits of Dead Rich White Men. John Singleton Copley was hired to paint a portrait in the 1760s, and, wanting to be polite, the sitter offered Copley a glass of wine before realizing that the corkscrew was missing. Copley thought this was hilarious and responded by painting a corkscrew on the wall so that they could never lose it again. Years later the corkscrew became so famous that they ripped out this chunk of wall and carted it off to the MFA. The best part is this is is his only documented still life in a museum. -- source link
