I got a new tattoo. It’s the branch of a redwood tree. All my tattoos carry foundational identity markers for me, and this one was due. . For one, the redwood is the tallest tree in the world, but its leaves are soft and tiny and its pine cones are the size of acorns. I love the thought that the mighty have delicate hands. . I’ve had many of my life altering talks at the feet of a redwood. Camping in their groves. They represent a convening of the gods, standing over us and a camp fire, listening to our tiny thoughts with warm amusement. . They just found the tallest one in 2006. 379.1 feet tall. Six stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. It was hiding deep in a Humbolt County forest for over 2000 years. . No bug can hurt them. Fire can’t penetrate their bark. . 95% of California’s redwoods were cut down to build San Francisco, San Jose, etc. Humans thought that nature was inexhaustible, and redwoods suffered for it. But we began to wake up just in time to slow our greedy cancer, and spare some of them. They are giants, dinosaurs, gods, and we almost destroyed them. In their majesty, they fell to build our homes. It’s all so powerful. . And now, I have a tattoo that pokes out my long sleeves, and tells anyone that might hire me that I’m edgy, dangerous, and probably love camping. Nailed it. .
