glass-scientists:Reworking Dr. Lanyon’s character! His role in the story has pretty much done a 180. He used to be a sworn rival and enemy of Dr. Jekyll, and now he is his ally and super snarky friend! Plus he’s like, super rich and influential. Fiercely loyal to his friends and savagely vengeful to his enemies. Do not get on his bad side, he will fuck your shit up. I think I’ve settled on him being half black, probably on his father’s side? (For some reason the cases I came across seemed to lean more towards the father.) I think I am stretching the likely range of class mobility for someone like him, but I do believe a racially-mixed man would, in general, have an easier time in England than he would have in America. I kept reading “London was a very racially diverse place in the Victorian era!” but damned if I could find any article that would give specific figures on the subject. :| How many black people were in London? Lots. Where were they? Oh, all over the place! -- source link
