Old Kansas City Airport (MKC, Now Called Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport), Separated from the Northern End of Downtown Kansas City by the Missouri River, Missouri, 1972.The photo was taken a few months before most flights to and from Kansas City were relocated to MCI, about 20 km from the city center. At that time Kansas City was a key US airline hub. TWA was a major presence with a maintenance facility and many flights. Subsequent airline consolidation, longer haul jets, and hub and spoke networks have reduced the city to a minor presence in the US airline system. Meanwhile the old airport, just a few minutes drive from the center of the city, has become a popular one for private and corporate planes. The newer airport is not very popular with flyers because of its distance from the city center, paucity of flights, lack of amenities and general design.Congratulations on the World Series. -- source link
