thehistoricalsociety: This Week In History - 25th October 1917 - The Bolshevik Revolution Nearly 100 years ago, Bolshevik leader, Lenin stages a coup to overthrow the Kerensky Provisional Government who had taken over Russia after the Tsar’s abdication in March the same year. When the Tsar abdicated, he left Russia to deal with three main problems: to continue the war or not, the logistics of feeding starving workers, and how to distribute the land to the peasants. The country was in chaos and the Provisional Government failed in solving these problems as they had continued the war for the sake of keeping allies and delayed any decisions on dividing the land to the peasants, ignoring over 1,000 complaints. Having returned from exile, Lenin now decided that it was the right time for a ‘workers’ revolution. On 25th October 1917, Lenin stormed the Winter Palace in St Petersburg after demanding the Provisional Government to step down. They had eventually surrendered to the Red Guards surrounding the palace and by the end of the night no shots were fired. The telephone and telegraph buildings were taken over, as were the power stations. Bridges were captured. So were the railway stations. The Bolsheviks were now in complete control of the city. -- source link
