Athena Promachos Bronze, 500-470 B.C. Votive offering to Athena by Meliso, who dedicated a tenth of her income to the work. National Archaeological Museum, Athens. The original Athena Promachos was a colossal statue of the goddess, created by the sculptor Phidias around 455 B.C.E. It stood on the Acropolis of Athens between the Propylaea and the Parthenon. The statue was transported to Constantinople around 465 C.E., where it was displayed in the Forum of Constantine. It was destroyed during a riot in the early 12th century when the statue appeared to beckon an attacking army to the city. -- source link
