What a Jonquil, or is it a Canary? Before the current trend for dry scientific language and professional gemmological certificates and their dull labelling the gem trade was full of poetry in a way that has now sadly passed away. The whitest diamonds were referred to as of the first water for example, and the yellows had a whole slew of exotic names, much more evocative than fancy deep orangey yellow or the like. The first comes from the French and means daffodil while the second is named after the famous bird that fought with Sylvester. Here we have a Russian stone from the Ebelyakh alluvial deposit, weighing in at 34.17 carats (5 of them to the gram) and measuring 20.17 х 19.65 х 15.1 mm. It seems eye clean of inclusions from here and exhibits a lovely intense colour. LozImage credit: ALROSAhttp://bit.ly/2DII75y -- source link
