sci-universe:I recently shared some awesome pics of Earth and now I want to dedicate a post about the person who took them: Samantha Cristoforetti, an Italian astronaut of the European Space Agency.Samantha (born in 1977) always dreamed of reaching the skies and is a devoted science-fiction fan from her childhood years. She put her dreams into practice by studying aerospace engineering in several universities around the world:In 2001, she graduated from the Technische Universität Munich, Germany, with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and specialisations in aerospace propulsion and lightweight structures. As part of her studies, she spent four months in France, working on an experimental project in aerodynamics. She wrote her master’s thesis on solid rocket propellants during a 10-month research stay at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technologies in Moscow, Russia. As soon as the Italian air force opened application to women, Samantha was one of the first to apply. As part of her training at the Italian Air Force Academy, she completed an additional bachelor’s degree in aeronautical sciences in 2005, and pilot training. Her career in the force saw her log over 500 hours with many military aircraft and she is now a captain of the Italian air force. In 2009 she was one of the six chosen from 8000 European applicants to join the ESA astronaut corps.Samantha is now working and living on the International Space Station as part of her 5-month-long Futura mission.you can follow her on twitter and facebook -- source link
