The earliest record of turmeric comes from an ancient Assyrian herbal from around 600 BCE. Scholars believe it came to the West from Persia, where it was used in place of the dwindling saffron supply. Its often called the “poor man’s saffron” because of the similar gold color.2. Turmeric supports the gallbladder, liver, and helps lower cholesterol. It aids digestion, heals external cuts and wounds, regulates the menses, relieves menstrual pains and helps reduce uterine tumors. In India its used an a treatment for ulcers.” 3. I use turmeric to make “turmeric paste”, which is boiling 3 tbsp. of turmeric powder with one cup water until it forms a thick paste (stir frequently). I add a tablespoon of the paste to yogurt with some honey to settle an upset stomach -its works fast and its delicious! I also add it to my dog’s food to help his creaky hips and joints. 4. The juice of fresh turmeric is a wonderful cure for many skin conditions, including eczema, chicken pox, shingles, poison oak/ivy, and scabies. Turmeric paste also works extremely well. Just apply the paste directly to the affected area and cover with gauze or some other fabric you don’t mind being stained. Your skin will be dyed slightly, but this goes away after a few days.5. Kundalini yogis use turmeric paste to make “Golden Milk” a healthy, delicious drink that soothes digestive upsets, promote healthy skin and help with stiff joints. Oh, and its really tasty and soothing! Here is Yogi Bhajan’s recipe if you don’t already have turmeric paste made:Golden Milk (recipe by Yogi Bhajan)1/8 tsp. turmeric½ cup water1 cup milk1-2 Tbsp. almond oil (optional)honey to tasteBoil water and turmeric in small saucepan over medium-high heat for 8 minutes (the turmeric must be fully cooked). Meanwhile, bring the milk and almond oil to boiling point in a separate pan and remove from heat.
