This morning, THE GIAOUR Composer Jono Podmore sent me this article (by Sam George, University of Hertfordshire, THE CONVERSATION, October 30, 2020): The First American Vampire was Black, and a Revolutionary. Soon after the publication of John Polidori’s THE VAMPYRE – falsely credited to Lord Byron – in 1819, an “American answer” appeared. THE BLACK VAMPYRE (1819) tells of a slave owner, a Mr. Personne in St. Domingue, who tries to murder a Black child and himself perishes in fire. Years later, his widow meets an “extemely handsome Black man dressed as a Moorish prince” and falls in love. “Mr. Personne” can be a Mr. Person. But “personne” in a sentence can mean “nobody.” Yes, both blood and re-animated corpses figure here. Zombies were the single-most significant cinematic (horror) invention in the second half of the 20th century that they eventually influenced the same from the first: the vampires. The fangs got bigger and bigger, until it was no longer believable that they belonged to beings who subsisted on a liquid diet. The same ideas that were evident in Europe are here: where “cultures” clash, one group tries to dehumanize the other, and the other fights back. The prince in THE BLACK VAMPYRE addresses the crowd: “Our fetters discarded, and our chains dissolved, we shall stand liberated, redeemed, – emancipated, – and disenthralled by the irresistible genius of UNIVERSAL EMANCIPATION!!” BLACK VAMPYRE, NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE (Uriah Derick D'Arcy/Richard Varick Dey, 1801-37), London, April 1819 Toussaint Louverture (1743–1803), Haitian Revolutionary leader Eduard Charlemont (1848–1906), The Moorish Chief, 1878 Regé-Jean Page in Regency costume (BRIDGERTON) ⚰️ #vampire #vampyre #zombie #reanimation #theblackvampyre #thefirstamericanvampire #lordbyron #thegiaour #thevampyre #johnpolidori #villadiodati #halloween #gothic #stdomingo #santodomingo #haitianrevolution #kumo #jonopodmore https://www.instagram.com/p/CVpE_aYrLFM/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
