uwmspeccoll:Flora and SylvaThis week we present All Around Us by Wilbur L. Beauchamp, Gertrude Crampton, and William S. Gray, and published by Scott, Foresman and Company in Chicago in 1944. The book is a part of our Historical Curriculum Collection and it is Book B from the series of “Basic Studies in Science.”William S. Gray (1885–1960) was an American educator and literacy advocate. In the 1920s and 1930s Gray was the director of the Curriculum Foundation Series at Scott Foresman. He also wrote books for the iconic Dick and Jane reader series by Zerna Sharp. There is very little text in the book All Around Us, it seems to be trying to convey concepts through different series of pictures. In the back of the book there is an “Index to Concepts.” For this post we are looking at illustrations of plants. Some of the concepts that are trying to be conveyed are: Plants have distinguishing features by which we can tell one plant from another.Plants grow and reproduce their kind.Seeds are produced from the flowers.Seeds are distributed in many natural ways.Sufficient light and water are necessary for growth.
