We are very excited to have a never-before-seen Coffin Texts from the Tomb ofHorhotep in our galleries. The large limestone panel with a colorful borderhas been at the Brooklyn Museum since the 1930’s. It is now installed in theMiddle Kingdom Section of Egypt Reborn.Asthe panel was cleaned and prepared for display this year, we were able to readits ink inscription. It turned out to be four chapters from the so-calledCoffin Texts - a precursor to the Book of the Dead.Egyptiansbelieved that placing certain funerary texts close to the body could help thespirit of the deceased continue his or her existence in the afterlife.Originally these texts were used exclusively in the pyramids of kings andqueens, but in the Middle Kingdom (circa 2008 – 1630 B.C.E) they were adaptedfor use in the tombs of non-royal individuals. Inscribed primarily on coffininteriors, they became known as Coffin Texts. Posted by Yekaterina Barbash -- source link
