a-l-ancien-regime: Ceiling Rose: Eating Room ~ Osterley Park House Central rose with vine-wreathed thyrsi. - A thyrsi is a staff tipped with a pine cone and twined with ivy, carried by Dionysus, Dionysian revelers, and satyrs. The traditional iconography of a banqueting room has always been to do with wine, and therefore with the god Bacchus. This one is no exception. The design of the ceiling plasterwork, with it’s bacchic emblems and sacrificial instruments is attributed to William Chambers. Inspiration for our gift tags -- source link
