“Freedom for Homos Now,” Gale Chester Whittington and members of the Committee for Homosexual Freedom protest States Steamship Company (States Line), San Francisco, March 1969. Photo by Marsha-Ann Woof Sebay Hill. In late March 1969, States Line fired Gale Chester Whittington from his administrative position, citing the fact that he was an open homosexual as cause; within days, the Committee for Homosexual Freedom (CHF), San Francisco’s first gay liberation organization, had formed. CHF organized daily protests outside of States Line and, in so doing, galvanized the city’s LGBT community into political action. Months later, as news of the Stonewall riots reached San Francisco, CHF could take much of the credit for the political infrastructure that was ready to build on the momentum coming out of New York City. Gale Chester Whittington, a pioneer in the gay liberation movement, died on August 11, 2013. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #gay #bi #trans #lesbian #homos #pride #galechesterwhittington #gayancestors #freedomforhomosnow (at San Francisco, California) -- source link
