eadfrith:So How Did He Do It ?Folio 94v from The Lindisfarne Gospels The Decorated Carpet page introducing the Gospel of Mark, and the associated decorated initial page opposite, f.95rIncredibly, this great Gospel Book is attributed to a single scribe, the Anglo Saxon Bishop Eadfrith of Lindisfarne in Northumbria, from sometime in the late 690’s to early 710s, So how did he do it? If we look carefully on the back of some of the pages we can see many of the designs have been drawn and marked out, possibly with a lead tipped stylus. It’s also been suggested that he would then use the ancient equivalent of a light box to paint the designs on the other side of the page.Cotton MS Nero D IV; Images from the British Library Manuscript website.http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.aspx?ref=cotton_ms_nero_d_iv -- source link
