Pillowbook is an exceptional creator of lingerie; the clever lines of this piece are breathtaking. As many of you know, I have a bit of a love affair with Chinese language and aesthetic. The Chinese language is one of the oldest languages still in use and Chinese art history is much more continuous than that of Europe. In fact, most of my favorite European art movements (German Expressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Fauvism) only came about after their initiators were exposed to art from Asia. Chinese art theorists were discussing the idea that realism was unnecessary and evoking the “idea” or “spirit” of an object could result in far better art many, many centuries before Europeans.Unfortunately, the only interaction many Americans have had with Chinese aesthetics are through stereotypes filtered through European or American eyes. Most of the fashion objects that we consider inherently Chinese are in fact created by fashion designers who are not Chinese themselves.Instead of looking affected and cliche, Pillowbook lingerie has an effect that is interesting and new. While I am entirely in favor in the mixing of different aesthetics to create something novel, I’m bored by anything that relies on stereotypes in an attempt to seem worldly. The above photo is a lovely example of what happens when a person well versed in both cultures melds European and Chinese aesthetics together. -- source link
