‘The Man Who Flew Into Space From His Apartment’ by Ilya Kabakov. This installation is part of a larger work called 'Ten Characters’. Kabakov created ten characters, who have each developed a distinct personality, and built two communal apartments in which they lived. The characters’ personalities have been shaped by the totalitarian regime they live under-Kabakov was a Russian artist working outside the official Soviet art system and each of the characters reflect an aspect of his life or personality. Their paranoia as a result of knowing they are being watched, perhaps even by their housemates, their extreme desire for escapism and their ability to overcome their banal, bleak existance is evident in both their names and their rooms, as each room is inhabited by a different character. -- source link
