While an unnamed office boy wearing a bowtie appeared in Action Comics #6 (November 1938), the character of Jimmy Olsen was introduced on the radio serial, The Adventures of Superman, on April 15, 1940, in order to give Superman someone to talk to. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created his first appearance in the comics, Superman #13 (November 1941).Jimmy Olsen is a young reporter and journalist who works for the Daily Planet. He is friends with Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and Superman (in many versions of continuity, he is unaware that Clark Kent and Superman are the same). He carries a “signal watch” which emits a special ultrasonic signal that notifies Superman when he is in trouble. Jimmy Olsen often finds himself in dangerous or embarrassing situations.An important and popular member of Superman’s supporting cast, Jimmy Olsen has appeared in the majority of Superman’s adaptations to other media.
