Lets go on a Shooting Brake: Part 1 Mercedes-Benz Concept Fascination, 2008. The recent demise of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake prompted me to consider the genre generally. Who doesn’t love a shooting brake? Well buyers apparently because few have been huge sales successes. Manufacturers often show them as concepts but less often do they actually offer them for sale and when they do they never seem to last very long. What exactly is a shooting brake? Originally conceived “to take gentlemen on the hunt with their firearms and dogs,” the term is generally applied to long-roofed versions of coupé or sports saloon models. Mostly they have 3 doors though some, such as the CLS, have 5. The Concept Fascination was based on a the C207 series E-class coupé so had 3 doors but hinted that Mercedes were considering a shooting brake which they eventually offered with the W218-series CLS in 2012 (the X218 CLS Shooting Brake was shown as a “near production” concept in 2010) -- source link
