astronomy-to-zoology: Bat Hawk (Macheiramphus alcinus) …a species of raptor native to sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia and parts of New Guinea. As its common name suggests the bat hawk feeds primarily on bats, however it will also take swifts, nightjars and sometimes insects. To catch its prey the bat hawk is crepuscular and hunts at dusk and dawn, it catches its prey mid flight chasing them at high speeds. This doesn’t always work and only 49% of hunts are successful. Like other hawks the bat hawk will preform impressive aerial displays and stunts during the mating season as a courtship ritual. This will occur almost every year.
