FossaThe fossa only inhabits Madagascar and is the largest carnivorous mammal on the island. It is closely related to the mongoose, but mostly resembles a cat with a dog-like muzzle. The fossa mostly feeds on small-medium sized mammals and are the top predator in Madagascar excluding humans. Lemurs consist of 50% of their diet. They hunt both during the day and night and usually do so independently as they are very solitary animals. Most of their communication with each other come through scent glands. They mark trees, rocks, and the ground to keep track of each other and communicate. Fossas have a very interesting mating routine as the female will sit high in a tree and males will compete with each other below the tree to gain mating rights. Once that female has left, a new female will take over and do the same routine. The same trees are used year after year for this routine. The fossa is endangered as it depends on the forests and the forests are being cut down. The fossa is rare as it only lives on the island making it vulnerable to extinction.Photo by: Tambako The Jaguar via Flickr -- source link
