berkeleyplace:feministcaptainkirk:I loved Spider-Man longer than I knew what love is and there is no reason why Peter Parker has to be white.ok. but there’s no reason he can’t be white, eitherYou know giving PoC (and women) a comic book hero to look up to is a great thing, my only question is why do it this way? What is with this recent trend of color changing gender/swapping superheroes in comic books? What’s the point? What’s the real message behind it all? I mean isn’t that what fanfic is for?To me it comes across as nothing more than politically correct gender/race appeasement to cause potential controversy and hopefully sell more comic books. Either that or it’s simply a complete lack of creativity on the part of comic book writers and film producers who cast super hero movies. If you want a super hero for PoC (or women) to look up to, why not create a new one and hype the shit out of it? I mean seriously how hard could that possibly be? Throw a cape on them and you’re halfway home. Personally, I don’t really care about Spiderman, He’s never exactly been my “go to” hero (I’m a big Batman and Punisher fan), but I can see how something like this might upset someone who grew up reading about Peter Parker for decades. I also don’t know what all this particular fuss is about Spiderman, or who this Adam Murray guy even is. Nor do I really care. The last comic book I bought was the Walking Dead. I haven’t bought a Super Hero comic in over a decade.. What I do know is that people are naturally resistant to change. It’s not a race or gender issue, it’s a people thing, and you can’t fault people for what they like and don’t like. Some things simply don’t need to be changed to remain relevant and/or “edgy”.Sorry but this whole process of “reboots” that goes on in comics, movies and television to me looks like nothing more than extreme creative laziness. At this point I’m waiting for a Firefly reboot that casts a tribal Samoan as Malcolm Reynolds. I mean seriously, how many Samoan syfy heroes are out there? And while we’re on the subject, how come Doctor Who is always a white guy? Never a woman, never a PoC, and never a ginger. -- source link
